There is plenty of free and inexpensive things to do in Atlanta, Ga. when traveling on a budget. Lack of money should not stop anyone from having a good time.

When money is tight it is possible to find free or inexpensive things to do in Atlanta, Georgia. From visiting a park to learning about art, there is a wide variety of inexpensive activities for families who take a trip to Atlanta.

Stroll through Piedmont Park. Any time of the year is pristine for walking through the park. Mellow out near the lake or, if it’s warm outside, bring a blanket and a picnic basket for a relaxing picnic in the park. Ride a bike in the park along the PATH trail. Piedmont Park is a Dog Park where pooches can run free and play without leashes.

Go Hiking with New Friends

Keeping It Wild represents a group of diverse conservationists who hope to encourage others to enjoy the outdoors and protect it. The group sponsors outdoor activities, such as hikes, or rafting around Georgia. The hikes and other activities are usually free or inexpensive. Visit the King Center

Many people do not realize that the Martin Luther King National Historic site is free to explore. Visit the home where Martin Luther King was born, his grave and where his father’s church. Touring King’s birth home is also free, but visitors must register. The free tickets for the birth home are available from the National Park Service Visitor Center, 450 Auburn Ave. from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and from daily. The last tour of the birth home is at 5 p.m. The tours are 30 minutes long. The King Center is located at 449 Auburn Avenue, N.E. Atlanta, Georgia. Freedom Hall in the King Center, 449 Auburn Ave., is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. A GPS ranger, a multimedia device which can help guide the way while touring the grounds are available for $9.95 at the bookstore inside Fire station #6. The fire station is located at 39 Boulevard Street (the corner of Auburn and Boulevard). Call the visitor center at 404-331-5190.

Go to Drive-in Movie in Atlanta

Go to a drive-in move. Drive-in movies still exist. There is a drive-in movie theater in Atlanta. The Starlight Six Drive-In Theater is located at 2000 Moreland Ave. has six screens. Entry is $7 per person. The fee for children, 3 to 9 is $1. Children two and under can get into the drive-in for free. Cash is required. There are no ATM machines available. A working radio is needed to hear the movie. Gates open Monday to Thursday at 7:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday at 6:30 p.m. and Sunday at 7 p.m. Show times vary.
