Join the region's Irish (or wanna be) Irish March 16 - 18 as they celebrate with the nation's second largest St Paddy's Day parade in the country!
Shooting shamrocks! The parade began in 1818, and now a whole weekend of fun is marching lively to the bagpipes.
Change whatever plans you have and get yourself to Savannah for one of the best city-wide parties in country. This saucy southern city lady is painting herself green in honor of St. Patrick ,and welcoming close to 600,000 people to party in the streets, squares and riverfront of the Savannah River.
The Savannah Waterfront Association, a major sponsor, kicks off the musical portion of weekend at noon on Friday with a battle of the bands at the Rousakis Plaza at Tubby’s Tank House and Huey’s. More music starts at 2:00pm with further down the Plaza.
The event is free, but a wristband ($5) must be purchased to consume alcoholic beverages. See below for listing.
Following a night of pagan revelry get yourself to Mass at the Cathedral of St John the Baptist. Red eyes and hangovers allowed.
After church follow the crowds to the parade route.
Starting at 10:00 and lasting two hours the parade begins at the corner of Gwinnett and Abercorn and makes its way up Abercorn to Broughton, then heads East to East Broad. It then turns North on E. Broad and then goes left on Bay past City Hall. Turning south on Bull Street it concludes at Harris Street.
Families and sober parade lovers might want to hop aboard the trolley for easy access to and from the event. $5.00 roundtrip tickets (two children 41” or smaller ride free with every paying adult) are available from Oglethorpe Mall where the trolley begins and ends.
Savannah’s City Market is also festooned with shamrock fever, including the opening of its newest eatery – the Rooftop Tavern. Perhaps a pint of Guinness and a rousing rendition of “Danny Boy” will be the highlight of your St. Paddy’s day. Sultry Savannah offers plenty of Irish bars to satisfy even the most loyal Irishman or woman.
Enjoy and Erin Go Bragh!
